What is hidradenitits?
Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic skin condition that consists of multiple swollen, painful, inflamed skin lesions usually found in the axilla (armpit), buttock, or groin. Hidradenitis is a condition of the apocrine sweat glands, and occurs when the glands become blocked or unable to properly drain due to incomplete gland development. This can lead to recurrent infections and abscess formation. There is thought to be a genetic factor associated with hidradenitis, and it is also found more commonly in those with darker skin pigmentation.
Patient’s with hidradenitis usually present with areas of painful, hard, raised nodules sometimes with drainage, in certain regions of the body including armpit, groin, buttocks, or other areas containing apocrine sweat glands.
Over time, the chronic nodules may result in scar tissue of the area affected. Within the lesions usually contains foul smelling pus like material, and can drain from time to time.
There are various treatment options including topical skin care to aid with reducing frequency and severity of flare ups, as well as oral antibiotics to help treat flare ups. However, neither of this is curative.
Definitive treatment of hidradenitis is achieved through surgical resection of the affected areas. This is often combined with reconstruction with local tissue versus skin grafting in extreme cases. Surgery is usually done under anesthesia in an outpatient surgery. Post operatively, you may have some tenderness at the surgical site. You should not submerge the surgical site in water such as a pool or tub for at least 2 weeks following surgery, or until incision is healed.
Additional postoperative instructions tailored to each patient will be provided at the time of consultation.
